Obscure Things In The Bible That Many People Never Notice

The Bible is filled with stories that are familiar to millions of people. We know about Noah, Moses, David, Daniel, Jonah and the disciples.

But Scripture also contains some incredibly unusual, surprising and easily overlooked details.

Some are miraculous. Some are mysterious. Some are funny. Others are quite difficult to understand.

These lesser-known passages remind us that there is always more to discover when we read God’s Word carefully.

A Floating Axe Head
A Floating Axe Head

A Floating Axe Head – 2 Kings 6:1–7

One of the sons of the prophets loses an axe head while cutting down a tree. The problem is that the axe was borrowed.

He is understandably upset.

Elisha asks where it fell, throws a stick into the water, and the iron axe head floats to the surface.

It is a remarkably small miracle compared with some of the better-known miracles in the Bible.

Yet it demonstrates something important: God cares about the things that concern us, even things that may appear insignificant to somebody else.

Talking Donkey
Talking Donkey

A Talking Donkey – Numbers 22:21–35

Balaam is travelling when his donkey suddenly refuses to continue.

The donkey has seen the angel of the Lord standing in he road, but Balaam cannot see the angel.

After Balaam strikes the animal, God enables the donkey to speak.

Perhaps one of the strangest parts of the story is that Balaam actually answers the donkey!

The passage reminds us that God can use unexpected circumstances to get our attention.

The Donkey Saw What Balaam Couldn't
The Donkey Saw What Balaam Couldn’t

The Donkey Saw What Balaam Couldn’t – Numbers 22:23–33

There is another fascinating detail here.

Balaam was the prophet, yet the donkey saw the angel before Balaam did.

Sometimes we can assume that because we have knowledge, experience or confidence, we must understand everything.

The story provides a powerful reminder that we should remain humble and willing to listen.

Gideon's Seventy Sons
Gideon’s Seventy Sons

Gideon’s Seventy Sons – Judges 8:30–35

Gideon had seventy sons because he had many wives.

One of those sons was Abimelek, whose story becomes one of the darkest episodes in Judges.

Abimelek eventually killed his brothers, although Jotham escaped.

It is an easily overlooked detail, but it becomes part of the wider warning about power, ambition and its consequences.

The Woman Who Dropped a Millstone
The Woman Who Dropped a Millstone

The Woman Who Dropped a Millstone – Judges 9:50–57

During a battle, Abimelek approaches a tower.

A woman drops an upper millstone onto his head and fatally injures him.

Concerned about how history would remember his death, Abimelek asks his armour-bearer to kill him.

The passage is uncomfortable, but it demonstrates how concerned people can become with reputation and how they will be remembered.

The Young Man Who Ran Away
The Young Man Who Ran Away

The Young Man Who Ran Away Naked – Mark 14:51–52

During Jesus’ arrest, Mark records that a young man was following Jesus.

When people tried to seize him, he escaped by leaving his linen garment behind and running away naked.

The Bible does not tell us who this young man was.

There have been suggestions about his identity, but Scripture itself does not give us an answer.

It is another reminder that the Bible sometimes gives us fascinating details without answering every question we might have.

Ezekiel Had To Lie On His Side
Ezekiel Had To Lie On His Side

Ezekiel Had To Lie On His Side – Ezekiel 4:1–8

God gave Ezekiel an unusual prophetic assignment.

He was instructed to lie on his left side for 390 days and then on his right side for 40 days as part of a symbolic message concerning Israel and Judah.

The prophets sometimes communicated God’s message not only through words but also through dramatic actions.

Ezekiel’s ministry reminds us that following God’s calling can sometimes require patience, courage and perseverance.

A Dead Man Came Back To Life
A Dead Man Came Back To Life

A Dead Man Came Back To Life – 2 Kings 13:20–21

This may be one of the most obscure miracles in the Bible.

After Elisha had died and been buried, another man was being buried when a group of raiders appeared.

The man’s body was placed into Elisha’s tomb.

When the body touched Elisha’s bones, the man came back to life and stood on his feet.

The passage is remarkably brief, but it is one of the Bible’s most unusual miracles.

A Little Oil Became A Lot
A Little Oil Became A Lot

A Little Oil Became A Lot – 2 Kings 4:1–7

A widow comes to Elisha because she is in financial difficulty and is facing the loss of her children.

She has only a small amount of olive oil.

Elisha tells her to collect empty jars from her neighbours and begin pouring.

The oil continues until there are no more containers.

What appeared to be almost nothing became enough to meet her need.

It is a beautiful reminder that God can work through what appears small or inadequate.

Naaman Was Told To Wash In The Jordan
Naaman Was Told To Wash In The Jordan

Naaman Was Told To Wash In The Jordan – 2 Kings 5:1–14

Naaman was a powerful military commander suffering from a skin disease.

He expected something dramatic.

Instead, Elisha’s message was simple: wash in the Jordan seven times.

At first Naaman was angry because the instruction seemed too ordinary.

Eventually he followed the instruction and was healed.

Sometimes we expect God to work in spectacular ways when the step-in front of us may simply be one of obedience.

God Knows What Is Hidden
God Knows What Is Hidden

God Knows What Is Hidden – Psalm 139:1–18

Not every obscure Bible passage involves something strange happening.

Some of the most profound truths can be hidden in passages we have read many times.

Psalm 139 describes God’s complete knowledge of us.

He knows when we sit and when we rise. He knows our thoughts and is familiar with all our ways.

There is nowhere we can go where God’s presence is beyond reach.

For someone feeling forgotten or alone, this can be an extraordinary truth.

Jesus Explained The Scriptures
Jesus Explained The Scriptures

Jesus Explained The Scriptures – Luke 24:13–35

After Jesus’ resurrection, two disciples travel towards Emmaus.

Jesus joins them, but they do not recognise Him.

As they walk, Jesus explains what the Scriptures said about Him.

Only later do they realise who had been walking beside them.

It is a wonderful reminder that sometimes we can be closer to God’s work than we realise.

Conclusion

The Bible is full of familiar stories, but it is also full of details that can easily be missed.

• An axe head floats.
• A donkey speaks.
• A donkey sees an angel before a prophet does.
• A man is revived after touching Elisha’s bones.
• A woman drops a millstone from a tower.
• A young man runs away naked.
• A prophet spends hundreds of days lying on his sides.
• A tiny amount of oil becomes enough to fill numerous containers.
• A powerful commander discovers that obedience can begin with something as simple as washing in a river.

These stories may seem unusual, but they are part of the same Bible that tells us about God’s love, faithfulness, mercy and salvation.

The more carefully we read Scripture, the more we discover.

Perhaps the next time you read a familiar passage, don’t rush past it because you think you already know the story.

Stop.

Look again.

There may be something you have never noticed before.
