Peer Advocate

Be a Buddy, Not a Bully

Be a Voice for Kindness — Be a Peer Advocate

In a world where people often feel left out, hurt, or bullied, God calls us to stand up for kindness, speak for the voiceless, and love our neighbors. As followers of Jesus, we’re invited to be buddies, not bullies — to encourage, not tear down.

📖 Proverbs 31:8 (NIV)

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.”

What is a Peer Advocate?

A Peer Advocate is more than just a friend—they are a trained, compassionate, and trustworthy supporter. They act as a bridge between someone facing bullying and the adults or authorities who can help. Peer Advocates:

  • Listen carefully and empathetically, offering a safe space to share feelings.
  • Recognise the signs of bullying, including verbal, physical, social, or online.
  • Guide peers to trusted adults, teachers, or church leaders.
  • Help restore confidence, self-worth, and a sense of belonging.
  • Encourage a culture of kindness, respect, and inclusion.

📖 Galatians 6:2 (NIV)

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ.”

What Does the Bible Say?

God teaches us to love others, treat them with kindness, and stand against injustice.

📖 Luke 6:31

“Do to others as you would have them do to you.”

📖 Ephesians 4:32

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

📖 Micah 6:8

“What does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

How Peer Advocacy Works

Follow a clear, safe, and faith-based approach to supporting those affected by bullying:

  1. Listen with Compassion
    • Advocates provide a non-judgmental ear.
    • Active listening helps the victim feel heard and validated.
  2. Respond with Care
    • Advocates are trained to respond calmly and sensitively.
    • They provide emotional support and reassurance that the individual is not alone.
  3. Refer to Trusted Adults
    • For serious or ongoing bullying, Peer Advocates guide peers to trusted adults—teachers, parents, or church leaders.
    • This ensures that professional help is involved while maintaining the safety and wellbeing of the person affected.
  4. Promote Positive Community
    • Advocates model Christ-like behaviour, fostering a culture of love, kindness, and respect.
    • They initiate and support peer activities that promote inclusivity and reduce isolation.

📖 Luke 6:31 (NIV)

“Do to others as you would have them do to you.”

Jesus Was a Friend to the Outcast

Jesus always noticed those who were left out, bullied, or looked down on. He was a friend to the lonely and stood up for the hurting.

📖 Matthew 25:40

“Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

How Can I Be a Buddy, Not a Bully?

Include others – Invite someone to join your group or conversation.
Stand up, don’t stay silent – If you see bullying, tell a trusted adult or leader.
Speak kindly – Use words to build up, not to tear down.
Pray for courage – Ask God to help you be bold, loving, and wise.
Be a bridge – Help people find connection, encouragement, and belonging.

Reflection

Who can you support or encourage this week? How can you be more like Jesus in how you treat others?

Prayer

Jesus, help me to be kind and brave. Make me a friend to the lonely, a voice for the silent, and a light in dark places. Use me to show Your love to others. Amen.
