While many people consider Jesus Christ to be a teacher or prophet, Christians say He was more than a mere human being. Jesus’ love makes it possible for people to have a genuine, meaningful relationship with God the Father. His death and resurrection fundamentally altered the path of human history. Here is a summary of what Jesus is and not by any means extensive or complete.
Jesus’ incarnation—the birth of God the Son as a human—was the foundational belief of Christianity. An essential part of Christian doctrine is Jesus’ crucifixion. Christians believe that Jesus’ suffering and death served as a way of atonement with God and salvation. Matthew 27:28-50
Jesus’ death was a part of a divine plan to people’s Salvation. Additionally, it was the fulfillment of the Bible’s Old Testament prophecies. Jesus Himself stated in Luke 18:31 that His crucifixion was a fulfillment of the prophecies. The Resurrection could not have occurred without the crucifixion taken place. The sins of humans were atoned for by Jesus’ death. Therefore, Jesus’ death is an essential step in humanity’s redemption and salvation.

The connection between people and God broke down because of Adam and Eve disobeying God’s commands in the account of the Fall. Christians hold that all people are prone to sin, or wrongdoing. Death and separation from God are the consequences of this; yet Jesus’ suffering and death on behalf of everyone means that people’s relationship with God is restored.
Jesus’ resurrection shows that life goes on after death and that individuals may regain their relationship with God by believing in his suffering and death, which atones for their crimes and their punishment. Furthermore, since followers of Christ and His sacrifice will be raised from the dead to spend eternity in Heaven with God and Christ, there is no longer any need to be afraid of dying.
