Overview

This two-day conference brings together academic theologians and church practitioners to explore how worship of the Triune God can faithfully shape the life of the church. Designed for those who lead worship – musicians, pastors, technicians – it offers theologically rich yet practical insights to support and renew the church’s worship and ministry.

Next men’s breakfast is on the 27th June. Professor Andrew Tomkins OBE, FRCP, FRCPCH, FFPHM, FMed Sci. will be joining us. Andrew is a committed Christian. His specialities in medicine included the interaction between nutrition and infection, especially among children in less developed countries, micronutrient deficiency and clinical outcome of infection, prevention of parent to child transmission of HIV, management of severe acute malnutrition.  We look forward to meeting him and listening to a fascinating and inspiring talk.

After qualifying in medicine and postgraduate training in London, Andrew worked in a new medical school (Ahmadu Bello University) and the Medical Research Council Unit in Malumfashi. in northern Nigeria where he established research and new management programmes among severely malnourished children. His subsequent postgraduate research training in Nutrition at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine enabled him to establish a range of applied research and training projects in child health and nutrition in association with colleagues in Africa where he has lived or stayed for over 15 years. His research showed the importance of micronutrient interventions for reduction of childhood morbidity and mortality and the importance of treating infection (including HIV) for the prevention and management of severe acute malnutrition. Summaries of his scientific papers are available on PubMed.

He set up the Centre for International Child Health, a research and teaching department at the Institute of Child Health, Great Ormond Street, London (now the Institute for Global Health, UCL) where ICH staff work with colleagues and their teams in many less developed countries, often assisting UNICEF,WHO, FCDO (formerly DFID), national government and NGOs with their child health and nutrition programmes. Andrew has been a trustee of Tearfund, UNICEF UK and Viva, UK. He has been a technical advisor to WHO, UNICEF and DFID.  He is presently “retired” but does not know how to do it yet. He is currently working on the Sudan Medical Link with South Sudan – a link between Salisbury Diocese, UK and 20 church based clinics in Western Equatoria, South Sudan and has recently returned from South Sudan. Andrew grew up in a caring, secular family and became a Christian as a student. Andrew is married to Celia; they have 3 children and 5 grandchildren. Andrew is a member of St Mary’s Church Corscombe and is involved in various community activities locally.

Venue:
