Who is God?

Understanding God is the foundation of the Christian faith. God is not simply a distant force or an abstract idea; He is a living, personal being who desires a relationship with every human. Through the Bible, we learn who God is, His nature, His character, and His plan for humanity.

The Bible is the main source of teaching for Christians. It is considered the Word of God by Christians. They hold that it is a source of authority that God has revealed to help individuals in living their lives as Christians. According to their interpretation, some Christians believe that the Bible is true. Other Christians, however, think that the Bible’s teachings should be considered for modern society.

The notion that God is kind and loving is proved in John’s Gospel 3:16 and Psalm 86:15. Christians hold that God’s love was revealed when he sent Jesus to earth to give humanity eternal life.

Christians hold that although there is only one real God, He is Three Persons, each of whom is experienced differently.

  • God as the Father
  • God as the son Jesus
  • God as a presence and power as the Holy Spirit.

The nature of God

Genesis 1 of the Bible’s account of creation reflects the notion that God is all-powerful and in charge of nature.

Important Concepts

  • The term “omnipotent” refers to God’s all-powerful, all-mighty, and limitless nature. Exodus 7-11, 14:21
  • Omnibenevolence, a quality that is ascribed to God, is the state of being infinitely kind and all-loving. Psalm 86:15, John 3:16, Romans 8:37-39
  • The three persons of God—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—are known as the Trinity. John 10:30, 4:6-11
  • The act of God taking on human form as Jesus is known as the Incarnation.

The Christian conception of God as the Trinity is emphasised by 6 versesFor Christians, this text makes it clear that “the Word” refers to Jesus.
In the beginning was the Word. Before the world was created, Jesus was there.
And the Word was with GodJesus was with God
And the Word was GodJesus was God
He was with God in the beginningGod and Jesus were present from the beginning.
Through Him all things were madeThrough Jesus all things were made
Without Him nothing was made that has been madeNothing was created that has been created without Jesus.

Discover the Heart of Our Faith

At Christian Life Today, we believe that knowing God is the most important journey anyone can take. God is not distant or unknowable — He has revealed Himself to us in love, truth, and power.

God, the Creator of All Things

God is the Creator of all things, both visible and invisible. The universe, life, and the intricate design of creation reveal His wisdom, power, and glory. From the vast expanse of galaxies to the tiniest cells, every part of creation bears the mark of His craftsmanship. Through creation, God’s glory is displayed, and His wisdom is evident in every detail. Observing the world around us shows that God is not only all-powerful but also purposeful—nothing was made by chance. Every star, every flower, and every living being is part of His divine plan. God fashioned the heavens, the earth, and all life within them; He is the ultimate source of life, beauty, and goodness.

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”Genesis 1:1 (NIV)

“For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.”Colossians 1:16 (NIV)

God’s Plan for Humanity

God’s love and justice are revealed in His plan for humanity. He desires a restored relationship with every person. Sin disrupted this relationship, but through Jesus Christ, God offers reconciliation, forgiveness, and eternal life.

“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”Romans 3:23 (NIV)

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”Romans 5:8 (NIV)

Through faith, we can receive God’s gift of salvation and live a life guided by His Spirit. God’s plan is not just about eternal life after death, but about transformation, hope, and abundant life here and now.

God is Eternal and Unchanging

Unlike humans, God is eternal—He has no beginning and no end. He is not limited by time or space. His promises, His character, and His love never change. This eternal nature gives us security in knowing that God’s word is steadfast and His purposes will endure forever.

“Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.”Psalm 90:2 (NIV)

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”Hebrews 13:8 (NIV)

God’s unchanging nature means that we can rely on Him in every circumstance. When the world shifts, our relationships falter, or life feels uncertain, God remains faithful.

God Is Love

At His core, God is love (1 John 4:8). His love is perfect, unconditional, and available to everyone who seeks Him.

God is Loving and Compassionate

At the heart of God’s nature is love. He loves humanity deeply and personally, even when we are unaware or distant from Him. God’s love is unconditional, extending forgiveness and grace to all who turn to Him.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”John 3:16 (NIV)

“The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.”Psalm 103:8 (NIV)

This love is not passive; it is active and transformative. God’s compassion draws people to repentance, healing, and restoration. He cares about the small details of our lives and rejoices when we seek Him with sincere hearts.

God is Holy and Just

God’s holiness means that He is perfect, pure, and separate from sin. His justice ensures that wrong is addressed and that righteousness prevails. God’s justice is balanced with mercy, offering forgiveness to those who repent.

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”Isaiah 6:3 (NIV)

“The Lord is righteous in all his ways and faithful in all he does.” Psalm 145:17 (NIV)

God’s holiness challenges us to live rightly and reflect His character in our own lives. It reminds us that sin cannot remain in His presence, but His mercy opens the door to redemption and transformation.

God Reveals Himself Through Jesus

God came to us in the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus lived a sinless life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again, offering salvation to all who believe (John 3:16).

God in Three Persons: The Trinity

Christianity teaches that God is a Trinity—three persons in one essence: the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit. Each person of the Trinity is fully God, yet distinct in role.

  • The Father: The Creator and Sustainer of life, who loves and cares for His children.
  • The Son (Jesus Christ): God incarnate, who came to the world to redeem humanity through His death and resurrection.
  • The Holy Spirit: God’s presence within believers, guiding, comforting, and empowering them to live according to God’s will.

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”Matthew 28:19 (NIV)

“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” John 14:26 (NIV)

The Trinity is a profound mystery, but it is central to understanding God’s nature and His relationship with us. It shows that God is not solitary; He is relational even within Himself, reflecting the importance of relationship in human life.

God is Personal and Relational

God is not a distant observer; He desires a personal relationship with each one of us. He speaks to us through Scripture, prayer, and the Holy Spirit. God comforts, guides, and strengthens His children in every circumstance.

“The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.” Psalm 145:18 (NIV)

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”Revelation 3:20 (NIV)

Through faith in Jesus Christ, we can experience God intimately—as a loving Father, a faithful Friend, and a constant guide in life. Knowing God personally brings peace, hope, and direction even in life’s most difficult moments.

Knowing God Personally

Knowing God personally is more than knowledge; it is experience. Through prayer, worship, reading Scripture, and following Jesus, we can encounter God in our daily lives. This personal relationship brings comfort, guidance, and unshakable hope.

“Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.”Psalm 34:8 (NIV)

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”John 10:10 (NIV)

Every person is invited to experience God’s love and presence. Whether you are searching, doubting, or seeking restoration, God is near and ready to meet you.

Want to Know God Personally?

If you’re curious about who God is or how you can begin a relationship with Him, we invite you to explore, ask questions, and take the next step in faith.

Conclusion

God is infinite, loving, holy, just, personal, and relational. He is the Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer, and Guide. Understanding who God is changes how we live—it inspires worship, obedience, and trust.

No matter where you are in life, God invites you to know Him, trust Him, and experience His transforming love.

“Come near to God and he will come near to you.” James 4:8 (NIV)
