What Is Communion?

Understanding Communion

What Is Communion and Why Does It Matter?

What Is Communion?

Communion, also known as the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is a sacred practice in the Christian faith. It is a time when believers come together to remember and celebrate what Jesus did for us through His death and resurrection.

Jesus began this tradition during His last meal with His disciples before He was crucified. He broke bread, gave thanks, and shared it with them, saying:

“Do this in remembrance of Me.” — Luke 22:19

What Do the Bread and Cup Represent?

The Bread represents Jesus’ body, which was broken for us on the cross.

The Cup (usually wine or grape juice) represents His blood, shed for the forgiveness of our sins.

When we take communion, we are remembering Jesus’ sacrifice, thanking Him for His love, and renewing our commitment to follow Him.

Why Do Christians Take Communion?

Communion is more than a symbol — it’s a spiritual moment of reflection, gratitude, and unity. Christians take communion to:

  • Remember Jesus’ death and resurrection
  • Reflect on their relationship with God
  • Repent and seek forgiveness
  • Reconnect with the body of Christ — the church

Who Can Take Communion?

Most churches invite anyone who has accepted Jesus as Lord and Saviour to take communion. Some churches may have specific practices or preparations, like baptism or personal reflection beforehand. It’s always about the heart — not just the ritual.

A Time of Grace and Hope

Communion is not just looking back — it’s also looking forward. Christians believe that one day, Jesus will return, and we will be with Him forever. Until then, we share in communion as a way to stay close to Him and one another.

A Sacred Moment with Jesus

Whether you’re new to faith or have been walking with Jesus for years, communion is a beautiful reminder of God’s grace. It’s a quiet, holy space where we remember, repent, and rejoice — all because of Jesus.
