Lent Scripture

Why does the Church mark Lent?

Lent is a season for Christians to prepare for Easter by reflecting on their lives and seeking to live more like Jesus. Many fast, give up treats, donate to charity, study the Bible, or meet with other believers to focus on Jesus’s life and the events of Holy Week.

Why 40 days?

Lent lasts 40 days to reflect the time Jesus fasted in the wilderness before beginning His ministry. Sundays, which celebrate the resurrection, are not counted.

Why give something up?

This follows Jesus’s example of fasting in the wilderness.

What are the Stations of the Cross?

The 14 Stations depict events from Jesus’s condemnation to His burial, guiding believers in prayer and reflection as they follow His journey to the cross.

MATTHEW 4:1-4

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
