The Alternative Christmas Present

Give Christmas Presents That Last a Lifetime

Some gifts have the power to change a moment. But some gifts have the power to change a life.

This Christmas, consider giving the gifts that cannot be wrapped gifts that reach deeper than the surface and remain long after the day has passed. Give someone your gifts as a gift—your compassion, your time, your presence, your love.

For many, Christmas is not wrapped in joy but in worry, loneliness, or financial strain. Others simply do not know what to give or feel they have little to offer. But the truth is this:

One of the greatest offerings you can give is yourself.

The pattern of Scripture teaches us that giving is not limited to money or possessions. God calls us to give from the heart, from the soul, and from the life He has blessed us with.

As Jesus said:
“Freely you have received; freely give.” — Matthew 10:8 (NIV)

This Christmas, consider giving the kinds of gifts that transform lives:

Ways to Give Yourself This Christmas

• Give rest to a weary carer
Carers carry more weight than many realise. Offer them even one hour of relief.
Sit with their loved one, share a cup of tea, listen to their stories.
Your hour could be the breath of strength they desperately need.

• Help someone who cannot read
Spend an hour a week reading with them.
As they grow in confidence, hope rises—your time becomes a gateway to freedom.
Remember Proverbs 31:8 —
“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.” Sometimes speaking up is simply showing up.

• Spend time with your neighbours
Especially those who are alone.
Your knock on their door may be the only one they hear all week.
Hebrews 13:16 reminds us:
“Do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”

• Reconnect with someone you haven’t spoken to in ages
A single phone call can mend bridges, restore friendships, and warm cold hearts.
And keep the connection alive consistency is one of the rarest gifts in our busy world.

• Comfort the bereaved
Christmas can amplify grief.
Sit with them, talk about their loved one, or simply be present in the silence.
Romans 12:15 says:
“Mourn with those who mourn.” Your presence can be a healing balm.

• Support a new Mum and Dad
Offer to help for an hour or run an errand.
New parents are filled with love—but also exhaustion.
Your kindness could be exactly the help they are too tired to ask for.

• Give someone a meal
Make an extra portion from your evening dinner and bless someone with it.
In Luke 3:11, John the Baptist said:
“Anyone who has food should share with the one who has none.”

These are not small gifts—they are kingdom gifts. They reflect the heart of Christ Himself, who gave His life not through possessions but through sacrificial love.

The Heart of True Generosity

2 Corinthians 9:6–7 (NIV)
“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.
Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

God is not concerned with the size of the gift but the size of the heart behind it.
True generosity flows from joy, not pressure. From love, not obligation.

Be the Rock That Causes the Ripples

Life is like a still pond—nothing changes until something touches the surface.

This Christmas, be the rock that causes the ripples.
One act of kindness can send waves of hope into someone’s life.
One hour of your time can lift a burden.
One meal can restore dignity.
One conversation can reignite faith.
One moment of compassion can spark a lifetime of change.

Jesus told us:
“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” — Matthew 5:16

When you give from the heart, your light shines. Your ripples spread. Your gift becomes a testimony of God’s love.

This year, give the gift that echoes through eternity— the gift of yourself, offered with joy, compassion, and Christlike love.
