Evangelism is the proclamation of the Good News of Jesus.
The act of sharing God’s love with others is known as evangelism. Our mission is to share the good news of Jesus Christ, which includes the promise of eternal life, repentance and forgiveness of sin, and the fullness of life. You have the truth that could change people lives
The purpose of Jesus’ disciples is to embody Good News, in addition to share it. Ensuring that the Good News is applicable to everyone, wherever. Jesus made God’s identity and the nature of His Kingdom clear. In addition to challenging his followers and others by pointing out the ultimate cost of following Jesus (Luke 14:25–33), he also served as an example of this unwavering loyalty to God by keeping his face firmly turned towards the Cross throughout his earthly existence.
Matthew 28:19 says: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Acts 8:26-40 “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?”
Evangelism in action in this story:
- Philip is alert and aware of God’s guidance.
- Philip encourages the ideas forward by starting where his listener is.
- In order to explain his faith to his listener, Philip is aware of it himself.
- Philip is aware that his listener needs to respond in some way.
- What you can say about the gospel message;
- How to uncover and share your personal journey to faith; • How church invites are a part of evangelism.
- How to help someone individually come to trust in Christ.
“Why we don’t evangelise”:
There are many reasons:
| Out of our comfort zone | Just don’t know how! | Fear of the unknown prevents us from trying. | Worry how the person is going to take it |
| Negative prior experience | Do not know how to speak to them in terms they can understand. | Could cause problems with friends, family or work | Political correctness |
| I’m not familiar with non-Christians. Or have no relationships with non-Christians | You do not know their beliefs | They won’t listen to me | Afraid they ask questions you don’t know |
| My church does not encourage evangelism | We’ve lost sight of our power source. | They are busy | They are not ready |
| They have already got views about being a Christian and the church | I do not want to knock on strangers’ doors. | I do not have the resources | I am not ready |
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT FOR OUR EVANGELISM?
Why is Jesus important? Why does He matter? Why do we believe He worth being followed?
These are important questions for us to think about as we explore our own faith, how to share it with others, and how to welcome them into our communities of faith.
JESUS IS OUR SAVIOUR
Before evangelism
Pray for you and them – ask for discernment In Colossians 4, Paul asks for prayer as he strives to wisely proclaim Christ. God would lead the person you are reading this to a point of conviction towards God, repentance from sin, and awareness over sin.
- Pray for the Holy Spirit to guide you
- Find resources that will help you
- Where do they make relationships with non-churchgoers?
One of the most important objectives of Jesus’ earthly ministry was to make disciples, then we ought to follow His lead to gain knowledge from it. As the first disciple, what can we learn from Jesus?
Let your friends and family know you are Christian by putting up posts on social media, this is dual fold a) it will not come as a shock to people when you start talking about your faith and b) this might lead people to ask questions.
Learn, become familiar and discover what you are going to evangelise, “What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me – practice these things and the God of peace will be with you” (Philippians 4:9).
Some people might become aggressive or agitated, you need to leave and not force the situation. Do not take it personally and in actual fact a reaction like this might have a positive outcome for the person later on as they digest what happened.
At all times stay safe, never go into a stranger’s home or someone you do not know well, it would be better to meet somewhere that there are other people around.
What do you need
Time, even if 10 minutes – it can be effective
Your attention – to the Holy Spirit and to the person you are discipling to
A spare Bible to give them
If you want to share the gospel with non-believers, you have to learn how to think and speak to them about the Gospel.
Teaching
| Capturing Hearts and Minds – We become captivated by Jesus. Mark 1.14–22 |
| Unlearning – We let go of our false ideas and opinions Mark 7.1–8, 14–23 |
| Storytelling- We tell stories to speak about God and people Mark 4.1–20 |
Who do you evangelise to?
- Out on the Streets – We go to people, rather than expecting them to come to us. Mark 3.1–12
- People on the Edge – We reach outside our comfort zone to people on the margins. Mark 10.46–52
- Responding to Real Needs- We scratch where people are itching. Mark 7.24–31
Your testimony is the strongest testimony of them all. How to Provide Your Own Testimony: Your Story Counts
- What changes has Jesus made in your life? Remember how and convey how you realised that the Holy Spirit was probably at work before you even knew it.
- Tell someone why I’m a Christian. What I would say if I had to explain to someone why I am a Christian
- How has God and Jesus transformed you? Remember the important turning points in your path.
- If we are to achieve, we must recognise opportunities and make the most of them. Your search for the truth and the path to faith were sparked by a restlessness (a spiritual hunger and thirst).
The Bible says we get stronger as we go (Psalm 84:7).
We are given all different gifts,
1 Thessalonians 3:2 NIV
2 We sent Timothy, who is our brother and co-worker in God’s service in spreading the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith,
Have confidence that the Holy Spirit is with you and do not be afraid if He takes you off your intentions or plans.
Don’t be afraid to answer challenging questions; if you don’t know the answer, don’t be scared to say so. Tell them you will check into it for them.
About them
| Spend some time interacting with them. | Make sure they have time so neither of you are rushed. | Talk to them, get to know them before evangelising. |
| Love them as your family, friend and as your neighbour. | Discuss topics of conversation that interests them | Don’t get complicated – Jesus frequently used parables to explain to the people more difficult spiritual lessons. Afterward, he would explain these lessons to his followers alone (Matthew 13:34–43). |
| Help a need **** | Leave them something they can look up themselves | Become their Bible partner |
| Do not be aggressive, do not force your faith, it is your responsibility to share, and it is the Holy Spirit responsibility to convict the person to change. | How will they be different as a result of being shaped by Jesus? | Have no predetermined stance about the person |
**** Action first, if they are in a crises help them do not mention until later about your faith. Lead by action and later relate to the Gospel. Move cautiously and modestly. Being truthful and attentive to their needs while helping them is caring. In evangelism, deeds speak louder than words.
When it comes to our outreach, it is critical that we keep in mind that we don’t have to do everything, allow the Holy Spirit to convict.
Not everyone will come to the Lord straightaway and sometimes you will never know the impact you had on someone later in life.
Encourage people – What next?
| Do you want to join us for dinner? For lunch? Coffee? Mark 2.13-17 | Do you want to attend church? |
| Would you like to study the Bible with me individually? | Remember how you come to faith was it by a person evangelising? How did they help you? |
| Make it fun | Be genuine, truthful, courteous, and natural. |
| Follow up | Don’t let miles become an obstacle Think about zoom or???? |
| Allow a Safe space | Give people time to digest what you are saying. Do not just blurt it out and rattle off fast. Give pauses for reflection. |
| Ask them if it is ok for you to pray with them | Respect their views people see things differently from you |
How do we communicate our faith? Use your creativity
Paul explains for us how to tell people close to us important truths about the way we see the world. He is able to show his audience where God is at work in their surroundings while giving them a chance to get involved in it by using the local poets and religion.
Acts 17:22-33.
Some ideas:
| A film | Art | Books |
| Your actions | Groups – Alpha or other like groups | Have a coffee, have a walk |
| Clubs | Newspapers and magazines – current news | Daily conversations – even via email – Include a verse from the Bible as your email “signature”. |
What impact can you make?
If you discipled to one person a year and they discipled to one person each year then by 10 years you could evangelised to 512 people. You can start small and watch the ripples flow out. Image in 35 years you could reach 8 billion people, your act of evangelism could touch the world. 12 disciples spent three and a half years with Jesus and 2000 years later you are a Christian, imagine what your discipleship could do? Let’s share Jesus with everyone, one person at a time.
As a Church
- Encourage and lead evangelism
- Prayer – pray for the people who you going to evangelise too beforehand, pray for them to be convicted by the Holy Spirit
- Encourage love
- Ask your church – What outreach programs has your church conducted in the past two years?
- Teach your church the value of making disciples.
- Request a budget allocation for discipleship from your church finances.

Conversations that are fearless and organic can arise from a spiritual yearning.
It’s possible that your friend has discovered how a mess up their life is and is now conscious of their transgression. Each of us has a different definition of spiritual thirst, but being ready and able to recognise when the time is right will enable you to successfully testify to them.

Nothing could be more significant than directing others towards the One who is the only source of eternal life. That is a priority that both saves and gives life.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life” (John 3:16). God is the source of our inspiration and our model.
