
Growing Deep in Christ
Rooted in Love
“And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ.” — Ephesians 3:17-18 (NIV)
Every healthy tree begins with healthy roots. While people often admire the beauty of a tree’s branches, leaves, and fruit, the real source of its strength lies beneath the surface. Deep roots provide stability during storms, nourishment during dry seasons, and the ability to continue growing year after year.
The Christian life is very similar. God does not simply want believers to appear strong on the outside; He wants them to be deeply rooted on the inside. The foundation of the Christian faith is not rules, traditions, or religious activities. The foundation is love—the love of God revealed through Jesus Christ.
Many believers spend years trying to earn God’s approval, forgetting that they are already loved by Him. Others struggle with feelings of rejection, guilt, fear, or insecurity. The answer to these struggles is found in understanding and experiencing the love of Christ.
Paul prayed for the church in Ephesus that they would be “rooted and established in love.” This remains God’s desire for every believer today. When we are rooted in God’s love, we become spiritually strong, emotionally healthy, and spiritually fruitful.
Understanding God’s Love
Before we can be rooted in love, we must first understand where that love comes from.
The Bible tells us:
“God is love.” — 1 John 4:8
Love is not merely something God does; it is who He is. Every action of God flows from His loving character.
From the beginning of creation, God demonstrated His love. He created humanity in His image and desired a relationship with them. Even when sin entered the world and separated humanity from God, He immediately began His plan of redemption.
The greatest demonstration of God’s love is found at the cross.
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8
Notice that Christ died for us while we were still sinners. He did not wait until we became perfect. He did not wait until we cleaned up our lives. His love came first.
Many people believe God loves them only when they perform well spiritually. However, the gospel teaches something very different. God’s love is not based on our performance; it is based on His character.
Nothing we do can make God love us more than He already does, and nothing we do can make Him love us less.
Rooted in Christ
Paul’s prayer in Ephesians connects being rooted in love with being rooted in Christ.
“So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love…” — Ephesians 3:17
A Christian’s roots must go deeper than church attendance, ministry involvement, or religious knowledge. Our roots must go into Christ Himself.
Jesus said:
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.” — John 15:5
A branch disconnected from the vine cannot survive. In the same way, believers cannot thrive apart from Christ.
Being rooted in Christ means:
- Spending time with Him daily.
- Reading and meditating on Scripture.
- Developing a life of prayer.
- Trusting Him during difficult seasons.
- Obeying His Word.
The deeper our roots grow into Christ, the stronger our faith becomes.
Storms may come, but deeply rooted believers remain standing because their foundation is secure.
The Depth of Christ’s Love
Paul prayed that believers would understand the vast dimensions of Christ’s love.
“To grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ.” — Ephesians 3:18
Human language struggles to fully describe God’s love because it is beyond measure.
His Love is Wide
God’s love reaches people from every nation, language, culture, and background.
Jesus died for the whole world.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son.” — John 3:16
No one is beyond the reach of God’s love.
His Love is Long
God’s love endures throughout our lives.
He loved us before we were born and will continue loving us throughout eternity.
“I have loved you with an everlasting love.” — Jeremiah 31:3
Human love sometimes fades, but God’s love never ends.
His Love is High
God’s love lifts us from sin into His presence.
Through Christ, we become children of God.
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” — 1 John 3:1
We are no longer slaves to sin; we are sons and daughters of the King.
His Love is Deep
God’s love reaches into the deepest places of our hearts.
It meets us in our brokenness, pain, failures, fears, and weaknesses.
There is no pit so deep that God’s love cannot reach us.
No matter where we have been, His grace is greater.
Rooted During Difficult Seasons
One of the greatest benefits of being rooted in love is stability during trials.
Life includes seasons of suffering, disappointment, loss, and uncertainty.
Jesus never promised a life free from difficulties.
However, He promised His presence.
When believers are rooted in God’s love, they can endure hardships without losing hope.
The Apostle Paul faced imprisonment, persecution, beatings, and hardship. Yet he confidently declared:
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future… will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” — Romans 8:38-39
Circumstances may change.
People may disappoint us.
Plans may fail.
But God’s love remains constant.
Like a deeply rooted tree surviving a storm, believers anchored in God’s love can stand firm through life’s challenges.
Rooted Love Produces Fruit
Healthy roots produce healthy fruit.
Jesus taught that those who remain in Him will bear much fruit.
“By their fruit you will recognize them.” — Matthew 7:16
When believers are rooted in love, certain qualities naturally begin to grow.
Love
We begin loving others as Christ loves us.
“Love one another as I have loved you.” — John 13:34
Joy
Our joy is no longer based on circumstances but on our relationship with Christ.
Peace
God’s peace guards our hearts even during uncertainty.
Patience
We learn to trust God’s timing.
Kindness
We begin treating others with grace and compassion.
Faithfulness
Our commitment to Christ grows stronger.
These qualities are part of the fruit of the Spirit described in Galatians 5:22-23.
Fruit grows naturally when roots are healthy.
Overcoming Fear Through Love
Fear is one of the greatest struggles many believers face.
Fear of failure.
Fear of rejection.
Fear of the future.
Fear of not being good enough.
The Bible offers a powerful truth:
“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear.” — 1 John 4:18
When we fully understand God’s love, fear loses its power.
We no longer need to prove ourselves.
We no longer need to earn God’s acceptance.
We no longer need to live in constant anxiety about our standing before Him.
His love provides security.
Knowing we are loved by God gives us confidence to face whatever lies ahead.
Growing Deeper Roots
How can believers become more deeply rooted in God’s love?
1. Spend Time in God’s Word
The Bible reveals God’s character and His love.
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” — Psalm 119:105
Daily reading helps us understand God’s heart.
2. Develop a Consistent Prayer Life
Prayer strengthens our relationship with God.
It allows us to experience His presence and guidance.
3. Worship Regularly
Worship reminds us of who God is and what He has done.
As we focus on Him, our faith grows.
4. Stay Connected to Other Believers
Healthy spiritual growth happens in community.
“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.” — Hebrews 10:24
We need encouragement, accountability, and fellowship.
5. Trust God Through Every Season
Roots grow deeper during difficult times.
Instead of running from God during challenges, draw closer to Him.
Every trial can become an opportunity for spiritual growth.
Living Rooted in Love Every Day
Being rooted in love is not a one-time experience; it is a daily journey.
Each day we choose whether to draw our strength from the world or from Christ.
The world offers temporary security.
Christ offers eternal security.
The world offers conditional acceptance.
Christ offers unconditional love.
The world offers uncertainty.
Christ offers peace.
When believers understand God’s love, everything changes.
We serve differently.
We worship differently.
We pray differently.
We view ourselves differently.
We view others differently.
The love of Christ becomes the foundation of every area of life.
Conclusion
God’s desire is not simply that we know about His love but that we experience it personally and deeply.
Like a tree planted beside streams of water, believers who are rooted in God’s love can grow strong, remain steady through storms, and bear lasting fruit.
Paul’s prayer remains a powerful prayer for every Christian today:
“And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power… to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge.” — Ephesians 3:17-19
May we grow deeper roots in Christ each day.
May we rest in His unfailing love.
May we stand firm through every season.
And may our lives become living testimonies of the incredible love of God revealed through Jesus Christ our Lord.
