Slow the speed of the prayer and give each line a greater meaning, grow in intimacy with our heavenly father and our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Matthew 6:5-8 NIV
Prayer
5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
The disciples’ attitude is admirable; they wanted to pray correctly and realised that it was their duty. Our obligation as Christians As we all know, Jesus prayed frequently, and He commands us to pray every day as well.
“Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples’” (Luke 11:1).
Matthew and Luke provide Jesus Christ’s actual prayer, even though these passages are memorable and memorisable. The complete 17th chapter of the Gospel of John is the longest one that has been documented. This is a lovely description of the prayer that Jesus prayed with His followers on the eve of the Passover. A true Lord’s Prayer is depicted in John 17.
Traditional Lord’s Prayer Matthew 6:9-15 (Sermon on the Mount)

Jesus taught His disciples a straightforward prayer that focused our attention on God, His plan, and our dependence on Him. This prayer exhorts us to put our faith and trust in God. It also demonstrates for us how we ought to love one another in this world.
Our Father in heaven……Hallowed be your name…
- The first line of the Lord’s prayer is a personal call to intimacy.
- God asks us to think of Him as a parent—someone who is near us, loves us, and provides for our needs. It serves as a reminder that we are all members of the same family as Christians. We are reminded that we are God’s cherished offspring when we pray to “Our Father.”
- Express gratitude for God’s nature and gifts to us.
- Gratitude for God’s unwavering love.
- Relax with God – as His child
- Give thanks for God’s faithfulness.
- To honour, revere, honour, and keep in the highest regard and with the utmost respect God’s name is to hallow it.
- Numerous Psalms demonstrate how to honour and glorify our wonderful God.Psalm 103:1 NIV Psalm 103 Of David. 1 Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
- The Father in heaven is the one to whom prayer is to be addressed. The source of all is the Father. James 1:17 NIV 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
- In the name of Jesus Christ, the only Mediator between God and humanity, we pray to the Father. Ephesians 5:20 NIV 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Timothy 2:5 NIV 5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,
- Praise God by prayer and acknowledge His authority. Philippians 4:4 NIV Final Exhortations 4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!
- What is the Father’s relationship with His child? compassion.
- Address Him as a parent. Galatians 3:26 NIV 26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith,
- God loves His children, and together we are one family. 2 Corinthians 6:18 NIV 18 And, I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”
- ‘Hallowed be your name’ teaches us to thank God first for everything. God is holy and good, therefore let us remember that before we ask for forgiveness. Majestic Lord. Psalm 34:1 NIV 1 I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips.
- Prior to asking for forgiveness, we must keep in mind that God is good and holy.
Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
- Ask God’s love to guide all of our interactions and dialogues in our homes and places of employment so that many people come to know Jesus.
- Pray for more individuals of all ages to come to know God’s kindness, mercy, and compassion in our homes and churches.
- We are promised that this world will see the establishment and continuous expansion of God’s Kingdom in the near future. Observing the world’s ills, crippling diseases, unpredictable weather patterns, conflicts, and political turmoil around the globe, we conclude that true peace and security—something we all long for—can only come from the Kingdom of God. Jesus prayed, “Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven” Matthew 7:21.
- Ask God to establish His reign here on earth in your prayers. At the core of Christ’s message was the arrival of God’s Kingdom on Earth. Mark 1:14 NIV Jesus Announces the Good News 14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. Matthew 6:33 NIV 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
- We should be motivated to pray sincerely that God’s will—His rule—will be established on earth to bring about peace in light of the suffering that exists in the world.
- Invite God into your houses, neighbourhoods, and throughout the world. Ask God to make His will our ultimate goal.
- Kingdom is – God’s church, that God is King over everything, it is having Jesus in your heart, sharing the Gospel.
- God wants to give us the kingdom. Luke 12:32 NIV 32 “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.
- When Jesus’ earthly ministry came to an end, He could tell His Father John 17:4 NIV 4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.
- God’s will not yours – Psalm 40:8 NIV 8 I desire to do your will, my God; your law is within my heart.” Philippians 2:13 NIV 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. Romans 12:2 NIV 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
- How may the establishment of God’s kingdom on earth appear? ‘Your kingdom come’ is a prayer that asks God to help us bring it to our homes, communities, and worldwide. We do it by asking God to align our wills with His. That’s difficult when it’s unpleasant or costly. However, ‘there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain’ will come. Revelation 21:4
Give us today our daily bread.
- God the giver – not just physical but our spiritual and emotional needs as well.
- God gives willingly, Matthew 7:11 NIV 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!
- God provides for our needs, Philippians 4:19 NIV 19 And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. 2 Corinthians 9:8 NIV 8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
- Offer your prayers for God’s love to reach the parishes and the community’s most vulnerable members.
- Pray for God to provide for everyone attempting to establish His kingdom in the parish or community.
- Mimic the method of eating bread slowly and deliberately.
- This serves as a reminder to thank God and ask for food and other necessities on a regular basis. It can also be used to pray for God’s assistance in allowing us to eat from His Word every day. God wants us to understand the importance of the spiritual nourishment He provides and how studying the Bible can help us get to know Him better.
- Trust God faithfully to provide for you. God desires that we grow in our trust in Him to “supply all [our] need” in times when we are unable to manage. Philippians 4:19 NIV 19 And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.
- By submitting our everyday bodily needs to God and putting our trust in Him to provide for us after we have done our best, we show that faith Matthew 7:7-11 NIV Ask, Seek, Knock 7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. 9 “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!
- Who provides us with true bread? Our Father. What occurs to people who accept Christ? They won’t ever go hungry. What kind of hunger is this that Jesus refers to? a yearning for spirit, a spiritual hunger.
- It is not adequate to pray to the Lord once for everlasting bread; one should pray to him every day. Daily bread meets not only material requirements but also spiritual and intimate needs with God.
- Ask for His bread for today and for tomorrow. Ask for God’s nourishment.
- Where must our hope lie? Proverbs 30:8-9 NIV 8 Keep falsehood and lies far from me give me; neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. 9 Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.
- Jesus is the bread of life, John 6:35 NIV 35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
- Live a life of a worthy manner, 1 Corinthians 11:27-30 NIV 27 So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. 29 For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.
- A daily prayer is the Lord’s Prayer. Praying for everlasting bread is something we should do every day, not just once. God created us to be intimate with Him, thus He intends for us to spend time with Him daily. Furthermore, our “daily bread” isn’t often actual bread. We can pray to God for our needs. He also promises to provide.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
- We would want to invite you to confess the moments when we haven’t stretched out in love and instead have been afraid.
- Pray for the courage to share with others the impact that Jesus has had on our life. Don’t lead us astray into temptation but protect us from evil.
- Offer prayers for some of the parishes or community’s needs.
- Ask God to show you five people that you should be praying for so that they may know Jesus. You have glory and power in the kingdom, both now and forever.
- Pray for the Holy Spirit to pour out again on His church at Pentecost.
- Please pray for a great number of individuals to learn the truth about Jesus throughout the world.
- Ask God to bless each other, your parish/community, as well as every home and church:
- What debts do we owe? We have all sinned and come short of the glory of God Romans 3:23 NIV 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. We all sin daily, and we do daily.
- We have no possibility of receiving forgiveness if we don’t forget and forgive the transgressions we believe others have done against us. Says Jesus Christ “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses” Matthew 6:14-15.
- Death is the price of sin Romans 6:23 NIV 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in[a] Christ Jesus our Lord. Jesus Christ’s blood provides the means of forgiveness. We “confess our sins” to God in prayer 1 John 1:9 NIV 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness, and then ask for Him to help us in conquering those sins Luke 3:8 NIV 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.; Ephesians 4:22 NIV 22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; in order to be forgiven of the sins we commit on a daily basis.
- Ask for improved relationships with other people in your prayers. God desires for us to live in harmony with one another Matthew 22:39 NIV 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’[a]. When those relationships are strained, we ought to be ready to provide forgiveness and seek God’s guidance on how to act in a way that promotes peace. Matthew 6:14-15 NIV 14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. And Matthew 5:24 NIV 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.
- Does the Father take His child’s apology seriously? The father is eager to hear everything. Psalm 103:12 NIV 12 as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
- We occasionally feel like we have failed. Although it is not always easy to confess. Consider a moment when you have silently acknowledged that you have failed. When you finally admit it, how do you react? When we feel so horrible about ourselves, let us not forget how much God loves us.
- Do we ever truly forgive those who have wronged us? When someone declines to pardon us, how do we respond? Matthew 18:21–22 NIV The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant 21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.
- Can I forgive others as God has forgiven me? We must maintain our focus on being obedient by continuing practicing forgiveness. It changes people, including us. 1 John 1:8 NIV 8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
- Pray for the unkind and wicked, Luke 6:35 NIV 35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.
- Forgiveness is necessary. I must forgive others that hurt us as God has forgiven me. Although difficult, it is an act of obedience.
And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
- Revelation 12:10 NIV 10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Messiah. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down.
- God does not tempt you, James 1:13-14 NIV 13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.
- The accuser of the brethren and the evil one is Satan, the devil. He is extremely intelligent, full of subtlety, and detests anyone who believe in God. In his ruthless attempts to use sin and temptation to drive us away from our Heavenly Father, he will never give up. 2 Corinthians 11:14 NIV 14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 1 Peter 5:8-9 NIV 8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
- James 4:7-8 NIV 7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
- Pray for spiritual development and strength. For Christians, sin and Satan’s influence are ever-present threats. Praying for God’s help to overcome sin – Ephesians 6:10-18 NIV The Armor of God 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full Armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full Armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Become more like God is necessary Matthew 5:48 NIV 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.; – Ephesians 4:13 NIV 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ..
- God sent Jesus to earth so that, by trust in him, people can have their sins forgiven. Their sins are covered by the blood of Jesus; therefore, God is able to forgive them. God sent Jesus to demonstrate that he always acts justly and morally. He was correct in the time in the past when he showed patience and absolved individuals of their crimes. He continues to act morally in our day and age. God worked everything so that permits Him to fairly judge individuals and still set the right among those who possess faith in Jesus.
- What tempts us in? What was Jesus’ response to temptation? Matthew Chapter 4, verses 1–11 He was authoritative and cited scripture. (Bible Gateway) https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=matthew%204%3A1-11&version=NIV
- Asking our Father God to save us from evil is right and reasonable. Even if things aren’t always easy in life, we can always sense His peace especially if we ask for it.
- It serves as a reminder that we are powerless to prevent or hide from the devil, and that by accepting this, we remain conscious of him.
- It is a prayer to protect us from other people’s bad plans. Pray for the full armour of God, Ephesians 6:11 NIV 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.
- The Greek term “temptation” can also mean “test,” and in some Bibles it refers to “times of trial.” Our God is our refuge and our protector. How do we make sense of this while going through difficult times?
- Do not gratify the flesh Romans 13:14 NIV 14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.
- Keep an eye out for false prophets, Matthew 7:15 NIV True and False Prophets 15 “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. Mark 13:22 NIV 22 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.
- Another meaning of the Greek word “temptation” is “test,” or “the time of trail.” God is our refuge and our protector.
- Often referred to as “deliver us from the evil one,” Matthew’s Gospel serves as a reminder that we cannot defeat the devil or evil on our own. It is a prayer to protect us from other people’s evil schemes. And there is healing and hope for those who have endured.
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever.
- Acts 1:6 NIV 6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” Jesus spent forty days conversing with His followers following His resurrection. At that moment, they questioned Him about whether He would “restore the Kingdom.”
- When Jesus returns to earth, one of His first acts will be to establish God’s kingdom, ending all previous kingdoms. What a wonderful occasion that will be. 1 Corinthians 15:24 NIV 24 Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power.
- Give glory to God. 1 Chronicles 29:10-13 NIV David’s Prayer 10 David praised the Lord in the presence of the whole assembly, saying, “Praise be to you, Lord, the God of our father Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. 11 Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. 12 Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. 13 Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name.
- Remember that God reigns over everything.
Amen
- “Amen” ends the Gospels, the book of Revelation, and nearly all of the epistles (James and 3 John are the exceptions). This word is also one of the names referring to Jesus. “And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write, Revelation 3:14 NIV To the Church in Laodicea 14 “To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation.
- By saying “Amen,” we also attest to the veracity of what came before. In Matthew 6, Jesus said that we should approach our Heavenly Father at the outset of our prayers and conclude them with “Amen.” Before we close, we also have the amazing opportunity of adding, “In Jesus’ name.” John 14:13-14 NIV 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
