In God’s eyes, our identity is not first defined by the many roles we carry but by our relationship with Him. We may be a spouse, parent, grandparent, employer, employee, friend, neighbour, or church member, but those are responsibilities—not our deepest identity. The Bible teaches that who we are in Christ is far more important than what we do.
Every day we wear different hats. We might begin the morning as a parent getting children ready for school, become an employee or business owner during the day, spend time as a friend over coffee, and return home to be a spouse or caregiver. Life is full of changing roles and responsibilities.
These roles matter. God has entrusted them to us, and we should seek to fulfil them faithfully. Yet if we build our identity solely upon them, we will eventually struggle. Children grow up, careers change, relationships can end, health can fail, and seasons of life come and go.
The wonderful truth of Scripture is that our identity in God never changes.
We Are Created in God’s Image
Before we ever had a job, a family, or a title, we were created by God Himself.
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”
Genesis 1:27 (NIV)
Being made in God’s image means every human life has value, dignity, and purpose. Our worth is not determined by success, appearance, wealth, intelligence, or popularity. It comes from the One who created us.
The world often asks:
• What do you do?
• How much do you earn?
• What have you achieved?
God asks something far deeper:
“Do you know Me?”
We Are God’s Children
Perhaps the greatest privilege a believer has is being adopted into God’s family.
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”
1 John 3:1 (NIV)
Think about that for a moment.
The Creator of the universe calls us His children.
• Not because we earned it.
• Not because we deserve it.
But because of His incredible love shown through Jesus Christ.
Our earthly relationships may disappoint us, but our heavenly Father never abandons His children.
We Are Loved Beyond Measure
God’s love is not based upon our performance.
Sometimes we believe God loves us more when we have read our Bible every day, prayed longer, or served more faithfully.
Yet His love was demonstrated while we were still sinners.
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8 (NIV)
Nothing surprises God.
He knows our failures, weaknesses, fears, and struggles.
Yet He still loves us completely.
We Are Forgiven
Many people carry guilt from years ago.
• Perhaps mistakes in parenting.
• Failed relationships.
• Wrong decisions.
• Words they wish they could take back.
The enemy loves to remind believers of their past.
God reminds us of His grace.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
1 John 1:9 (NIV)
When God forgives, He truly forgives.
• Our identity is no longer “failure.”
• Our identity becomes “forgiven.”
We Are a New Creation
When we place our faith in Christ, something remarkable happens.
We are made new.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)
• Our past no longer defines us.
• Our mistakes no longer own us.
Christ gives us a new beginning.
We Are Chosen
Many people spend their lives trying to fit in.
• Trying to be accepted.
• Trying to earn approval.
Yet Scripture reminds believers that God has already chosen them.
“For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.”
Ephesians 1:4 (NIV)
• You are not an accident.
• You are not forgotten.
• You were chosen by God.
We Are God’s Workmanship
Sometimes we compare ourselves with others.
We think someone else is more gifted, more successful, or more spiritual.
God never compares His children.
Instead, He reminds us we are His workmanship.
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)
God has designed each believer uniquely.
No one else can fulfil the exact purpose He has prepared for you.
We Are Ambassadors for Christ
Our identity also comes with a mission.
We represent Jesus wherever we go.
Whether at home, at work, in the supermarket, or online, we reflect Christ to the world.
“We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.”
2 Corinthians 5:20 (NIV)
People may never read a Bible.
But they may read our lives.
We Are the Temple of the Holy Spirit
God does not simply watch us from heaven.
He lives within every believer.
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?”
1 Corinthians 6:19 (NIV)
The Holy Spirit guides us, comforts us, convicts us, and empowers us to live faithfully.
We never walk alone.
We Are More Than Conquerors
Life brings hardship.
• Illness.
• Loss.
• Financial pressure.
• Disappointment.
Yet our identity is not “defeated.”
Paul writes:
“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”
Romans 8:37 (NIV)
Our victory comes not through our own strength but through Christ.
Our Roles Change—Our Identity Does Not
A person may retire and no longer be an employee.
Children may leave home, changing the role of a parent.
A spouse may become widowed.
Friendships may change.
Health may decline.
But God’s view of His children never changes.
You remain:
• Created in His image.
• Loved by the Father.
• Redeemed through Christ.
• Filled with the Holy Spirit.
• Chosen for His purposes.
• A child of God.
• An heir of His kingdom.
Those truths remain constant throughout every season of life.
Living from Identity Rather Than for Identity
Many people spend their lives trying to prove their worth. They work harder, seek more recognition, or chase achievements, hoping these things will give them value. Yet Scripture calls us to live differently. We do not work for God’s acceptance—we work from God’s acceptance.
• Because we know we are loved, we can love others.
• Because we are forgiven, we can forgive.
• Because we are secure in Christ, we do not need the world’s approval to know our worth.
Our identity becomes the foundation from which we serve as faithful spouses, loving parents, diligent employees, compassionate friends, and devoted members of our communities.
Conclusion
The world may identify you by your profession, family role, achievements, or social status, but God sees something far greater.
He sees His beloved child.
He sees someone created in His image, redeemed through the blood of Christ, filled with the Holy Spirit, and called to live for His glory.
Your titles may change throughout life, but your identity in Christ never will.
So, when someone asks, “Who are you?” remember that before you are a spouse, parent, employee, employer, friend, or neighbour, you are God’s beloved child.
As Paul reminds us:
“For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.”
Colossians 3:3 (NIV)
May we live each day not merely according to the roles we fulfil, but according to the unchanging identity we have in Jesus Christ, finding our confidence, purpose, and hope in the One who calls us His own.
