The Full Armour of God

Standing Strong in the Spiritual Battle

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.”

Ephesians 6:10–11 (NIV)

Introduction: The Reality of the Battle

Every believer is engaged in a spiritual battle. Whether we realise it or not, each day we are on a battlefield—not of flesh and blood, but of spiritual forces that seek to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). Paul’s exhortation in Ephesians 6 is not metaphorical fluff; it is a solemn call to arms. But we are not sent into battle unarmed. God, in His mercy and wisdom, has given us everything we need to stand firm: the full armour of God.

This passage (Ephesians 6:10–18) is both a divine encouragement and a spiritual strategy. Let us walk through it piece by piece—understanding what each part means, how we wear it, and why it matters in our daily lives.

The Call to Strength: “Be Strong in the Lord”.

Before even naming the armour, Paul begins with the foundation: “Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.” (Eph 6:10)

Spiritual strength is not about our effort, confidence, or personality—it is about dependence on the Lord. Like David before Goliath, our strength is in the name of the Lord, not in ourselves (1 Samuel 17:45). The Christian life is impossible without God’s power, but with Him, we are more than conquerors (Romans 8:37).

We do not put on armour to retreat—we put it on to stand and advance.

Understanding the Enemy: “The Devil’s Schemes”

“Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” (Eph 6:11)

Satan does not come as a red figure with horns and a pitchfork. He comes subtly—through doubt, temptation, distraction, discouragement, pride, and deception. The word “schemes” implies calculated tactics. The enemy studies our weaknesses. But God’s armour is crafted not only to protect, but to nullify the enemy’s lies.

Paul clarifies that “our struggle is not against flesh and blood” (v.12). People are not our enemies—principalities, powers, and rulers of darkness are. Our spiritual weapons are needed because we are facing spiritual realities.

The Full Armour: Seven Pieces of Divine Equipment

Let’s explore each piece of God’s armour, their biblical foundations, and their present-day application.

🛡️The Belt of Truth

“Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist…” (Eph 6:14)

Truth is foundational. In ancient Roman armour, the belt supported and connected the rest of the pieces. Without it, the warrior was vulnerable.

In our walk with Christ, truth is what holds us steady in a world of half-truths, relativism, and deception. Jesus declared, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). God’s Word is truth (John 17:17).

🔸 How to wear it:

  • Saturate your mind with Scripture.
  • Refuse to compromise integrity.
  • Speak truth in love.
  • Reject lies about your identity and God’s character.

🛡️ The Breastplate of Righteousness

“…with the breastplate of righteousness in place.” (Eph 6:14)

The breastplate protects the heart—the seat of our emotions, desires, and identity. We are not covered by our righteousness, but by Christ’s (Philippians 3:9). His righteousness guards us from guilt, shame, and spiritual attack.

This piece also calls us to live righteously—not in perfection, but in pursuit of holiness (1 Peter 1:16).

🔸 How to wear it:

  • Daily confess and repent.
  • Rest in Christ’s justification.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to empower holy living.

🛡️The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace

“…with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.” (Eph 6:15)

Shoes give stability and mobility. The Gospel brings peace with God (Romans 5:1) and equips us to walk through trials without fear. It also empowers us to bring that peace to others. The Gospel makes us ready—ready to go, to serve, to speak, to love.

🔸 How to wear it:

  • Be grounded in the peace of Christ (Colossians 3:15).
  • Be willing to share your faith.
  • Be quick to forgive and walk in reconciliation.

🛡️ The Shield of Faith

“Take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” (Eph 6:16)

In battle, arrows were often dipped in pitch and set on fire. Satan shoots lies like flaming arrows: “You’re not enough.” “God doesn’t love you.” “Your prayers don’t matter.”

Faith raises a shield—not in self-confidence, but in God’s unshakable promises. Faith doesn’t mean we never doubt—it means we choose trust over fear.

🔸 How to wear it:

  • Memorise and declare Scripture over your life.
  • Speak faith when you feel weak.
  • Walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7).

🛡️The Helmet of Salvation

“Take the helmet of salvation…” (Eph 6:17)

Our minds are under constant attack. The helmet protects our thoughts from confusion, anxiety, and despair. Salvation is not just a past event—it’s a present identity and a future hope. We are saved, being saved, and will be saved (1 Corinthians 1:18).

The helmet is assurance. It allows us to face the day with confidence, knowing that nothing can separate us from God’s love (Romans 8:38–39).

🔸 How to wear it:

  • Meditate on your salvation story.
  • Reject toxic thoughts and take them captive (2 Corinthians 10:5).
  • Renew your mind with truth (Romans 12:2).

🛡️The Sword of the Spirit

“…and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.” (Eph 6:17)

The Word is both defensive and offensive. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He didn’t argue—He quoted Scripture (Matthew 4). The sword must be used accurately, faithfully, and consistently.

The Word of God is living and active (Hebrews 4:12). It silences lies, exposes sin, strengthens the weary, and brings clarity in chaos.

🔸 How to wear it:

  • Read it daily.
  • Memorise verses.
  • Pray Scripture over your life and others.
  • Study and meditate on it to go deeper.

🛡️The Power of Prayer

“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests…” (Eph 6:18)

Though not called a “piece” of armour, prayer is what energises and activates the whole ensemble. It is our lifeline to the Commander. Prayer strengthens our spirit, aligns us with God’s will, and opens heavenly resources.

Praying “in the Spirit” means praying guided by the Holy Spirit—sometimes with words, sometimes in silence, sometimes in groanings too deep for words (Romans 8:26).

🔸 How to wear it:

  • Cultivate a daily prayer habit.
  • Pray Scripture.
  • Pray in worship, intercession, and thanksgiving.
  • Involve others in prayer.

Why the Full Armour Matters: Daily and Eternally

We don’t wear the armour to impress others—we wear it because our spiritual lives depend on it. The battle is daily, subtle, and often internal. Temptation doesn’t announce itself. Lies slip in quietly. Despair creeps in unnoticed.

But every piece of armour offers protection. And together, they allow us to stand—not just survive.

As Paul says three times in this passage: “Stand.” (vv. 11, 13, 14)

This armour isn’t optional for Christians. It’s essential. It’s not for elite believers—it’s for every child of God. The good news? You don’t have to forge your own armour. God gives it freely to all who ask.

Living Armoured: Daily Practices for Spiritual Strength

Here’s how to make the Armour of God part of your daily walk:

☀️Morning Routine: Spiritual Dressing

Before you dress your body, clothe your soul:

  • Speak Ephesians 6:10–18 aloud.
  • Pray over each piece.
  • Declare truths: “I am covered. I am protected. I am equipped in Christ.”

📖Daily Word: Feed on Scripture

Keep your sword sharp and shield high by consuming Scripture regularly.

🙏Continual Prayer: Stay in Communication

Keep an open line with God. Whisper prayers in traffic, meetings, and quiet moments.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑Accountability: Stay Connected

Warfare isn’t meant to be fought alone. Join a small group, prayer partner, or church fellowship.

Conclusion: Victory Is Yours in Christ

“Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:57)

The Armour of God isn’t a fantasy—it’s real. It’s spiritual, but no less powerful. And you are not alone. The Spirit lives within you, the Word goes before you, and angels surround you. Every morning you rise, you can stand firm—not because you are strong, but because God’s strength is made perfect in your weakness.

So, beloved child of God—suit up.

A Prayer to Put on the Armour of God

Heavenly Father,
Today I put on the full armour You’ve given me.
I buckle the belt of truth around my waist.
I place the breastplate of righteousness over my heart.
I put on the shoes of peace and readiness to walk in Your Gospel.
I lift up the shield of faith against every fiery dart of the enemy.
I put on the helmet of salvation to guard my mind in Christ Jesus.
And I take up the sword of the Spirit—Your living Word.
Let me pray always, and stay alert in You.
Make me strong in Your power, not my own. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
