The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken

What was the very first mention of the Holy Spirit in the bible?

How would you describe the Holy Spirit?

If you describe the Holy Spirit as an entity or force it sounds impersonal, yet you cannot describe as human. 

The Holy Spirit, Father, and Jesus are independent and interdependent, separate but inseparable, distinctive but a give and take, shared relationship with each other. 

The Holy Spirit is knowledge and moral guidance to live with integrity, authenticity, to capture characters of God in which are truth, integrity, reliability, and honour. To power phrase this  

“It benefits those who walk with him – become more like Jesus.” 

There are several different symbols of the Holy Spirit in the bible

Dove- The dove also represents God bringing peace to mankind through Jesus and his sacrifice. Fire – When the disciples received the gift of the Holy Spirit, flames appeared on their head as a sign they were filled with the transforming energy of the Holy Spirit. This energy would help them in the work ahead, teaching others about Jesus and encouraging more followers.

This energy would help them in the work ahead, teaching others about Jesus and encouraging more followers. Water – Water is used as a symbol of cleansing and as a source of power. life giving cleansing – John 7:37-39- 37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” [a] 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given since Jesus had not yet been glorified. 
Cloud – A cloud combined with light is often used as a symbol of the Holy Spirit because clouds provide life-giving water, and they represent God who is hidden from sight but is always there. Anointing oil – In the Bible, oil is used to anoint people rather like a blessing. It represents Jesus being given the Holy Spirit to perform certain actions in God’s name, like healing people and doing good deeds. Oil is also a sign of the power of the Holy Spirit. 

Who can have a spiritual relationship with the Holy Spirit?

Would it be a pastor, a person that has been a Christian for many years, or someone who has become a Christian just this second?

The answer is all three, everyone who has accepted Jesus as their Saviour from that very moment you can have a relationship with the Holy Spirit.  

The Holy Spirit wants to dwell in you, he longs to be welcomed, he is excited, and he wants to work with you and through you to accomplish his goal. You have accepted God and Jesus in your life, so you are 2/3rd already there. It is stated about the Trinity to achieve a fuller deeper relationship with God and Jesus we need to invite the Holy Spirit in our lives.  

The Holy Spirit will use your skills from your past and your scars from the past. Start your walk with the Holy Spirit and “Come as you are,” and if you already have a relationship with the Holy Spirit still “Come as you are” for he is the one who knows your heart and will transform you.  

 In Ephesians 2:22 NIV it states 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit. 

The Holy Spirit will transform you while he is either working with you or working through you.  

Whether you have been walking with the Holy Spirit already or just starting your journey “Be thirsty for the Holy Spirit,” ask for the Holy Spirit to enter your life or keep asking the Holy Spirit to be in your life, especially as we leak and we need replenishing,  

In Galatians 5:22 NIV it says 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 

Who would not want that? A gift that has been given to us to have a deeper relationship with God and Jesus, and while you are being transformed you will have a relationship with the Holy Spirit.  

In Jesus’s words John 14:26  26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 


How to speak and listen to the Holy Spirit

Learning to speak and listen to the Holy Spirit begins with quieting your heart before God and inviting Him to guide you. Speak to the Spirit through honest prayer—share your thoughts, fears, desires, and questions just as you would with a trusted friend. Listening to the Holy Spirit requires stillness and attentiveness: He often speaks through Scripture, gentle impressions, inner conviction, and the peace (or lack of peace) that settles in your heart. Regular time in God’s Word sharpens your spiritual ears, while obedience keeps your heart sensitive to His leading. The more you draw near to God in humility and trust, the more clearly you will learn to recognise the Spirit’s voice above the noise of life.

The Holy Spirit can speak to us in many ways, in Ephesians 5:18 Paul writes:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit,

How can we be open to the Holy Spirit? 

Being open to the Holy Spirit begins with a willing heart—one that humbly invites God to lead, guide, and transform. We open ourselves by creating space for silence and prayer, surrendering our own agendas, and asking God to shape our desires to match His. Openness grows when we cultivate a listening posture: slowing down, reading Scripture with expectation, and paying attention to the gentle nudges, convictions, and encouragements that align with God’s character. It also means obedience—responding when the Spirit prompts us to love, forgive, speak, or be still. As we walk in trust and purity of heart, resisting anything that grieves the Spirit, we become more sensitive to His presence and power. Openness is not a one-time act but a daily posture of surrender, saying, “Holy Spirit, have Your way in me.”

How do you know if the Holy Spirit is speaking?  

  • The voice will be one of conviction 
  • You could be overwhelmed with emotion 
  • Having a feeling of gratitude  
  • Having a feeling of peace  
  • Feeling His reverence  
  • You can feel love               
  • You have been given direction  
  • The type of language, and how much is said e.g., single words or long sentences  
  • Inside a burning ember or raging fire 
  • A small voice, low whisper  
  • He may Introduce Himself  

The Holy Spirit communicates in different tones, language, and out of our comfort zone. We need to be open out of our comfort zone to able to listen to the Holy Spirit. 

We need to recognise the Holy Spirit voice, presence, and hear his guidance and how to identify him. The Holy Spirit changes you and uses you as a vessel to help change others. The Holy Spirit has an impact on people, spiritually, emotionally, intellectually, physically, giving life impacting, and life changing situations.  

How to listen to the Holy Spirit? 

Recognise the sound of his voice  
Learn to verify his voice  
Learn the volume of holy Spirit 
Learn the language of the Holy Spirit  
Learn this unwavering truth the Holy Spirit will never contradict God’s Word 

Here is a litmus test to give yourself when you cannot decide whose voice you are hearing: 

  • Is your first instinct to defend yourself or prove you are right? If so, that is your flesh. It is not the Holy Spirit. 
  • Are you looking down on someone or feeling disdain for another person? If yes, your own experiences and teachings have shaped us. The Holy Spirit is always love and wants to give you love for every person. 
  • Are you envious of what someone else has, feeling you deserve the same thing? If so, again your own experiences and teachings have shaped us. The Holy Spirit never leads us to or condones jealousy. 
  • Are you struggling to apologize and admit you are wrong? That too is your flesh. The Spirit’s desire is for your pride to decrease and the humility of Christ to grow in its place. 
  • Do you see the stroppy toddler version of yourself coming alive? Do you want what you want when you want it? That is walking in the flesh, not the Spirit. The Holy Spirit desires sacrifice for God that is also God-dependent, not sacrifice for self-glory. Come as children.  
  • Are you ungrateful and discontent? If so, you are being led by your flesh. Ingratitude is never from the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is never intended to be a silent partner, his plan is not to be a visitor, his footprints we will never see but we will feel them, his voice to be heard, his desire to work with our experience leaving fingerprints on all areas of our life. He is an artist who seeks to paint us in vivid colours and bold images to reflect his presence. 

Sometimes the Holy Spirit may not reveal all and sometimes we may see a bigger picture later or sometimes never.

Never be afraid to ask other Christians or Elders in the church for help and ask questions about receiving guidance from the Holy Spirit, and those who have an established relationship with the Holy Spirit help others so they can actively walk with him.  

It says in Ephesians 6:17 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 

It is written in 2 Timothy 1:14  14 “By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.” 


Empowerment and anointing

The Holy Spirit desires to empower believers and affirm them to serve God and a relationship with God. The Holy Spirit empowers people to give a process of change. By the Holy Spirit empowering us he gives freedom, joy, faith, truth, revelation, gifts, these are never quenched, and we need to return to the source of the fountain of gifts.  

He works within us, the Holy Spirit can choose whoever he wishes to work for him, but often the most likely people are people who demonstrate they are ready to work with the Holy Spirit. He desires worthy people who are prepared to follow him.  

What are the 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit? 

Wisdom – enlightens the mind and instills an attraction to the divine  
Understanding – understanding of Sacred Scripture This gift strengthens one’s insight through prayer, scripture 
Counsel – to enable a person to judge promptly and rightly, especially in inconvenient situations 
Fortitude – Fortitude is often identified with courage, describing it as a willingness to stand up for what is right in the sight of God, even if it means accepting rejection, verbal abuse, or physical harm. The gift of fortitude allows people the firmness of mind that is required both in doing good and in enduring evil 
Knowledge – The gift of knowledge allows one, as far as is humanly possible, to see things from God’s perspective. It “allows us to perceive the greatness of God and his love for his creatures” through creation 
Piety – Piety accords with reverence. A person with reverence recognises his total reliance on God and comes before God with humility, trust, and love. piety is a recognition of “our belonging to God, our deep bond with him, a relationship that gives meaning to our whole life and keeps us resolute, in communion with him, even during the most difficult and troubled moments.” Francis goes on: Piety is not mere outward religiosity; it is that genuine religious spirit which makes us turn to the Father as his children and to grow in our love for others, seeing them as our brothers and sisters 
Fear of the Lord – Fear of the Lord is akin to wonder (or awe). With the gift of fear of the Lord, one is made aware of the glory and majesty of God. And a grateful realisation that only in him do our hearts find true peace. A person with wonder and awe knows that God is the perfection of all one’s desires. This gift is described by Aquinas as a fear of separating oneself from God. He describes the gift as a “filial fear,” like a child’s fear of offending his father, rather than a “servile fear,” that is, a fear of punishment. Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. (Thomas Aquinas – was an Italian Dominican friar and priest) 

What types of empowerment are there? 

  • Power of the Holy Spirit can equip. guides us, John 14:17 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[a] in you. 
  • To enable you “to preach [the] good news – boldly proclaim the gospel; 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8 – ministry 1 Corinthians 12:11 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.  
  • Gifts of the Holy Spirit 
  • To release the oppressed.” All around you are people oppressed by sin, by sickness, by demonic attacks, etc., You have a message of release for them. 
  • Comforting message of God’s grace abounds in hope and is filled with joy and peace. 13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 
  • “Doing good.” 
  • Empowers us believers to hear, discern, and hold to truth 1 John 2:20 
  • Help you sort out false teachers and false teachings. 
  • Pray when we do not know how; Likewise, the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses.Romans 8:26 26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.  
  • Appreciate the mystery of the gospel; Ephesians 3:16-19 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. 
  • Deny our flesh and live rightly; 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you[a] free from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:2 Romans 8:10-11 10 But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life[a] because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of[b] his Spirit who lives in you. Romans 8:10-11

God is infinite so there will be unlimited resources from the Holy Spirit.


Baptism, repentance, and being baptised in the Holy Spirit

We repent, we are baptised, we receive the Holy Spirit, is it that simple? What does it mean being baptised in the Holy Spirit mean? 

What are the benefits of being baptised in the Holy Spirit? 

Benefits of Being Baptised:  

You become Part of a Community. When you declare to everyone that you believe in Jesus through baptism, you are becoming a part of a community that believes the same.
Builds Your Faith 
Shares Our Faith to Others. 
Start Life All Over. 
Receive Holy Spirit  

“Baptised in the Spirit” indicates an outward immersion into the reality of the Holy Spirit, while “filled with the Spirit” suggests an internal diffusion. Both terms speak to the totality of receiving the Spirit .

Do I need to be baptised to receive the Holy Spirit? 

An instance where people received the Holy Spirit before baptism. 

In Acts chapter 10, Acts 10:44-46  44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues[a] and praising God. 

It is Your declaration of Christ died for you.  

To Obey Christ’s Command  
Matthew 28:19 v19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit 
To Publicly Profess Faith in Him 
Romans 10:9 v9 Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 
To Commit to Christ’s People  
Acts 2:42 v42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers 

Preparation for receiving the Holy Spirit? 

Our born-again experience, we have the opportunity to receive baptism in the Holy Spirit, which is an experience that allows the Holy Spirit to empower us.  

There is no perfect order of things, God can fill you with His Spirit even before you get water baptised.  

Jesus commanded us on more than one occasion to get water baptised.  

The Bible says that the Holy Spirit is given to those who obey the Father  

Acts 5:32 v32 32 We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.” 

Our hearts must be properly prepared through repentance. 

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 

There needs to be a real hunger and thirsting for it. 

Matthew 5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled

There must be a sense of expectation. 

Luke 11:9-13 “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10″For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 “If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 “Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” 

There must be an active response to your faith. 

James 2:20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? 

Draw closer to God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit in your own personal relationship with each One of Them. a one-on-one, intimate, personal relationship.  

You will have much more of God’s supernatural power flowing and operating through you if the Holy Spirit is residing up in your soul area rather than just down in your spirit. 

The Full Surrender 

Once you realise what this gift entails and that you will have to be willing to fully surrender to whatever God’s perfect plan and destiny is going to be for your life – then the next step is to take that big leap of faith and fully surrender everything over to God the Father. What God wants from you are four specific things: 

Your body. Your soul. Your spirit. Your entire life 

He wants all three parts to your being – body, soul, and spirit.  

1 Thessalonians 5:23 23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 

The Full Cleansing 

What this entails is that you simply confess any known sins that you may have on you that have not already been confessed and forgiven under the Blood of Jesus.  

Why? Because you would want Jesus coming into a “clean house” to visit you. 

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9) 

Baptising them in the name of the father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit 

John 1:32-33  32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ 

We can also be baptised in fire.  

People think that fire is devastating, feared of being burnt, but it enables new life. 

Baptism of fire refers to the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit was sent from heaven.  

Acts 2:2-3 NIV Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.

Luke 3:16 16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with  the Holy Spirit and fire.

There are times you do not need to be water baptised before you can receive the Holy Spirit.

What about John the Baptist? The Bible says he was filled with the Holy Spirit in his mother’s womb. 

Luke 1:15 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born. 

Prayer to Receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit 

Ask God the Father in a simple prayer request and you will then receive this mighty gift from Him. This gift is accepted by faith and belief. 

In the prayer that you are agreeing to make a full and complete surrender of your entire life over to Him. 

Overall 

We seek to establish a Father-child relationship with God the Father, and a best friend relationship with both Jesus and the Holy Spirit. 

The water is the cleansing, refreshing work of the Holy Spirit.  

Water is used in baptism and is vital for all life. In the same way, it is believed that the water used in baptism represents the receiving of the Holy Spirit and that it has a life-giving quality. 

When Jesus was baptised in the river Jordan, a dove appeared. The dove (Holy Spirit) was a physical sign of God’s presence.

2-way Communication Prayer and repenting

We live terribly busy lives and sometimes we rush our prayers, so our prayers become one sided.

How do we pray? At night? During the day? On the go? As we fall asleep? How can we include the Holy Spirit? 

When we pray, allow time of silence, in the sketch I did not allow Richard to tell me something, sometimes we do this in prayer. When praying for the Holy Spirit to work within us we should allow times of listening, how can we listen if we do not allow space for him to talk to us. These are times when we can seek God’s guidance through the Holy Spirit by listening in prayer. 

Remember although the Holy Spirit has no form (no body) he still feels, he has no ears, but he can still listen and hear, he has no eyes but still can see. 

Inviting and activly listening in prayer for the Holy Spirit, he can advise, help with praying, give you wisdom, you are having a conversation between yourself the believer and the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 6:18 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. 

Through the Holy Spirit we have access to the very mind of Christ 1 Corinthians 2:10b 10 these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. 

Paul also said to the Romans, “…the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered” Romans 8:26. That is, they cannot be put into our words. Many times, we do not have the words to pray, but we are praying, nonetheless. 

Without a quality Quiet Time, you can learn a great deal about the Holy Spirit. But only with a quality Quiet Time can you get to know Him personally. It is all about relationship. 

Repenting with the Holy spirit  

Can you name any reasons why people find it difficult to ask for forgiveness? Have you asked for the Holy Spirit to ask forgiveness for your sins? 

In Hosea God shows us what lengths he is willing to go to in forgiving and being faithful to us. Hosea 2:19 – 3:5. The Holy Spirit is delighted when we confess our sins, speaking to the Holy Spirit and allowing him to guide and direct you during your daily life. 

Asking for forgiveness is not easy, as we must confirm we are flawed. Forgiveness is the surrendering (people sometimes feel uncomfortable with this word) of ourselves into God’s mercy. 

Not confessing our sins allows us in a self-destruction.

With guidance from the holy spirit our journey can start and with his guidance we can become responsible for our sins, once we become responsible for our sins, we try harder not to repeat them. 

The Holy Spirit is there to help us grow; the Holy Spirit loves and helps us to grow with him.

The Holy Spirit is given to us to help us obey the Word of Christ so that we become God’s children.

John 14:26 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 

Without the help of the Holy Spirit, we cannot become God’s children. 

Having repented sincerely for our sins, let us then live our life by the power of the Holy Spirit, keeping in step with Him all the time as it is said in Galatians 5:25 25 The Spirit has given us life; he must also control our lives. 

Andrew Murray said. When we pray for the Spirit’s help … we will simply fall down at the Lord’s feet in our weakness. There we will find the victory and power that comes from His love.  The Holy Spirit helps to guide us and leads us towards living a more Christ-filled life.

Fellowship – Joined by the Holy Spirit  

Fellowship was brought into existence on the day of Pentecost when believers were given the gift of the Holy Spirit. All races and tongues were united by the fellowship. They became one soul, one heart, and united, bearing each other’s burdens. They were a community of charity and kindness that reflected and embodied Christ. 

It is a fellowship created by the Holy Spirit, sustained by the Holy Spirit, and directed by the Holy Spirit. 

2 Corinthians 13:14 14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all

 John 14:16 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—

Romans 8:9 You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.

John 14:26 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

John 16:13 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

1 John 1:3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ

What is your understanding of the fellowship of the Holy Spirit?

As prophetic people, we are wired for a close relationship with God. This is the place where we become acquainted with Him, His ways, and His voice. 

That drawing and pull you feel towards Him, is a gift from your Heavenly Father; it is your invitation to fellowship with Him. 

The Fellowship of the Holy Spirit 

Paul’s second letter to the church in Corinth closes with this word of blessing 2 Cor 13:14: 

‘May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.’ 

On a personal level, to have fellowship with the Holy Spirit is to commune with Him. It is to be actively engaged in a relationship with Him. It is to partner with Him. 

Following are 3 keys to help you have intimate fellowship with the Holy Spirit and go deeper in your relationship with Him. 

1. Fellowship with the Holy Spirit by Appreciating Him as a Person 

Have you ever noticed how many movies portray ordinary people, who have supernatural powers? It is interesting that science fiction writers point to some physical, impersonal thing, like radiation or a mutant gene, as the source of a superpower. 

At Pentecost, the believers were not waiting for power, radiation, or an ability—they were waiting for a Person. The power came with the Person of the Holy Spirit—someone with Whom they could fellowship and do life, ministry, and mission together. 

‘And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.’ John 14:16-17, NKJV When Jesus said ‘another’, the Greek word ‘allos’ meant ‘another the same as’; ‘the same sort’. [2] He went on to say, ‘I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.’ (John 14:18) Jesus was saying, ‘the Holy Spirit will be with you just as I have been with you.’ 

Throughout the Book of Acts, we see the Person of the Holy Spirit actively present—leading, speaking, and manifesting. 

‘And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.’ Ephesians 4:30 

The Holy Spirit has a mind, will, emotions, and a voice. The Holy Spirit is God, up close and personal. And we can have a relationship with Him. 

2. You can Fellowship with the Holy Spirit Because of What Jesus has Done 

‘May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.’ 2 Cor 13:14 

True fellowship (communion) goes both ways. We in turn give the Holy Spirit our love and honor. His interests become our interests. In order to receive the Spirit’s help and comfort, we must surrender our weakness and need to Him. 

We surrender our will in order to receive His guidance 

We yield our tongues in order for Him to pray and speak through us 

And we give Him our bodies to express the love of the Father and the grace of Jesus through us 

Is the Holy Spirit putting His finger on something that you need to yield to Him at this time? 

Intimacy with the Holy Spirit – How can you have intimacy with the Holy Spirit?  

Most of us desire to get closer to the Holy Spirit but we must realize that intimacy is a by-product of time spent together. When we fellowship (spend time with the Holy Spirit) with Him we begin to deepen our relationship with Him.  

It’s no different than when you spend time with a friend or significant other. The more time spent the closer you will become. And the Holy Spirit is not some energy or some form of power. He is a person yet spirit.  

Becoming Sensitive to the Holy Spirit- how can we become sensitive to the Holy Spirit? 

The Holy Spirit at times will nudge us or promote us to say or do something. Or many times I have witnessed him nudge me NOT to say something. This sensitivity to Him grows as we fellowship with Him.   

Paul also told us in 1 Thessalonians 5:19 not to quench the Holy Spirit. We will not know if we are if we are not sensitive to Him.  

Producing the Fruit of the Spirit – how do we produce fruit of the spirit? 

Paul talks about living in the Spirit and walking in the Spirit. That this leads us to produce the fruit of the Spirit. This is all part of our fellowship with Him.  

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. – Galatians 5:22-25 NKJV 

The fruit of the spirit affects us mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically. How?  

We don’t stress or worry like others because we have peace and joy. This helps our physical, mental, and emotional state.  

We are able to make good decisions and say no to things that could cause us harm or be a sin because we have self-control. 

Our relationships with others prosper because we are walking in kindness, love, goodness, long-suffering (patience) and gentleness.  

I don’t know about you, but I firmly believe that is the kind of Christian life we should all be experiencing. And we only get it one way…fellowshipping with the Holy Spirit!  

The gifts of the Holy Spirit. He is the one who freely gives these gifts and causes them to operate in our lives. The closer we are with Him the more we will operate in the gifts of the Spirit. Which in turn builds up and strengths the body of Christ! 

When I was little my aunt would always give me a sweet when I visited. The more I visited the more I got. If I did not visit, I got less. It did not change her love for me, but I was not able to receive as much because I was not with her to receive them. The Holy Spirit works this way too.

The Holy Spirit: His Role in a Christian’s Life

The Christian life is not meant to be lived in our own strength. From the moment we put our faith in Jesus Christ, God gives us the Holy Spirit as both a gift and a guarantee (Ephesians 1:13–14). The Spirit is God’s presence with us — teaching, guiding, empowering, and transforming us into the likeness of Christ.

Jesus Himself promised:
“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever — even the Spirit of truth.” — John 14:16–17

The Holy Spirit is not distant or impersonal. He is active in the daily life of every believer. Below are 10 key roles the Holy Spirit plays in the life of a Christian, with Scripture and practical reflection.


1. The Holy Spirit Indwells Believers

“Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?” — 1 Corinthians 3:16

The moment we believe in Christ, the Spirit takes residence within us. Unlike the Old Testament where God’s presence dwelled in a physical temple, now every believer becomes a living temple. This indwelling means we are never alone — God Himself is with us wherever we go.

Reflection: How often do we remember that God’s Spirit lives in us? Our lives are sacred because His presence fills us.
Application: Treat your daily walk, work, and relationships as holy spaces where the Spirit is present.


2. The Holy Spirit Teaches and Reminds

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit… will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” — John 14:26

The Spirit helps us understand God’s Word and reminds us of Christ’s teaching when we need it most. When Scripture comes alive in our hearts, it is the Spirit who illuminates truth.

Reflection: Have you ever had a verse come to mind exactly when you needed it? That is the Spirit’s work.
Application: Ask the Spirit each time you open the Bible to guide your understanding and bring God’s truth to life.


3. The Holy Spirit Convicts of Sin

“And when He comes, He will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.” — John 16:8

The Spirit reveals the areas in our lives that are not aligned with God’s will. Conviction is not condemnation — it is God’s loving call to turn back to Him and walk in righteousness.

Reflection: Conviction may feel uncomfortable, but it is proof that God loves us too much to leave us in sin.
Application: When you sense conviction, respond with humility and prayer. Thank the Spirit for guiding you toward holiness.


4. The Holy Spirit Guides into Truth

“When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth…” — John 16:13

We live in a world filled with confusion and competing voices. The Spirit acts as our guide, leading us in wisdom and truth, always pointing us back to Christ.

Reflection: True freedom comes when we follow the Spirit’s leading instead of our own limited understanding.
Application: Pray each day, “Holy Spirit, guide me into truth today. Lead me in decisions big and small.”


5. The Holy Spirit Empowers for Witness

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses…” — Acts 1:8

The Spirit gives believers courage and boldness to share the gospel. Our witness is not about eloquence but about Spirit-filled testimony of what Christ has done in our lives.

Reflection: The same Spirit who empowered Peter at Pentecost empowers you today.
Application: Ask the Spirit to open doors for sharing Christ and to give you the words to speak in love.


6. The Holy Spirit Produces Fruit

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” — Galatians 5:22–23

The Spirit’s presence transforms us from the inside out. Instead of striving in our own effort, He produces Christlike character in us.

Reflection: Fruit is evidence of life. A Spirit-filled life will naturally display Christ’s qualities.
Application: Instead of asking, “How can I be more loving?” pray, “Holy Spirit, produce love in me.”


7. The Holy Spirit Gives Spiritual Gifts

“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit…” — 1 Corinthians 12:4–7

The Spirit equips believers with spiritual gifts for the building up of the Church. These gifts are diverse, but all serve one purpose — to glorify Christ and serve His body.

Reflection: Every believer has a gift — none are insignificant.
Application: Pray for wisdom to discover your gift and use it to serve others faithfully.


8. The Holy Spirit Strengthens in Weakness

“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness…” — Romans 8:26

The Spirit intercedes for us when we do not know what to pray. In seasons of weakness, He becomes our strength and carries us through.

Reflection: Our weakness is not a barrier to God’s work — it is the very place His strength is revealed.
Application: When you feel overwhelmed, simply pray, “Holy Spirit, help me.” Trust that He knows what you cannot put into words.


9. The Holy Spirit Assures Us of Salvation

“The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” — Romans 8:16

Doubts may come, but the Spirit provides deep assurance of our salvation. He reminds us that we belong to God and that nothing can separate us from His love.

Reflection: Assurance is not based on feelings but on the Spirit’s testimony within us.
Application: When doubts arise, rest in the Spirit’s witness — you are a child of God.


10. The Holy Spirit Sanctifies Believers

“God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.” — 2 Thessalonians 2:13

Sanctification is the lifelong process of being made holy. The Spirit shapes us day by day, conforming us to the image of Christ.

Reflection: Holiness is not instant but ongoing — the Spirit patiently works in us until the day of Christ’s return.
Application: Surrender daily to the Spirit’s refining work. Invite Him to make you more like Jesus.


Walking Daily with the Spirit

To live by the Spirit is to depend on Him, trust His leading, and surrender our will to God. Paul writes:
“If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.” — Galatians 5:25

The Spirit is our Comforter, Teacher, and Guide. He is God’s gift to every believer — drawing us closer to Christ and empowering us to live as witnesses to the world.

Prayer:


Holy Spirit, fill my life afresh today. Teach me, guide me, strengthen me, and shape me into the likeness of Christ. Help me walk in step with You, bearing fruit for God’s glory. Amen.
