Understanding and Embracing the Spiritual Gift of Discernment
“To another discerning of spirits…” — 1 Corinthians 12:10 (KJV)
A Gift for a Confusing Age
We live in a world overflowing with noise—social media opinions, false teachings, cultural trends, and spiritual deception. Amid the chaos, God has given a powerful and often under-appreciated spiritual gift: the gift of discernment. This gift is not about suspicion, criticism, or judgment—it is about spiritual clarity, wisdom, and protection. It is a divine ability to perceive what the natural eye cannot see and to recognize the truth in the midst of falsehood.
The gift of discernment is not reserved for the spiritually elite. It is a gift from the Holy Spirit, available to the body of Christ for the building up and safeguarding of the Church.
“But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.”
— 1 Corinthians 12:7 (KJV)
What Is the Gift of Discernment?
The gift of discernment—sometimes called discernment of spirits—is a supernatural ability to perceive the presence, nature, and origin of spiritual forces. This includes recognizing the Holy Spirit, demonic spirits, human motivations, and even angelic activity. While all believers are called to grow in discernment (Hebrews 5:14), this particular gift is given by the Spirit for specific service and ministry.
The Greek word used in 1 Corinthians 12:10 is “diakrisis”, meaning:
- To distinguish, differentiate, or judge rightly
- To separate what is true from what is false
- To identify what spirit or source is behind a word, teaching, atmosphere, or action
Why Is Discernment So Important?
In a spiritually deceptive world, discernment is crucial for survival and victory.
- To Protect Against Deception “For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform signs and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, the elect.”
— Mark 13:22 (ESV) Discernment enables us to recognize counterfeit messages, false teachings, and deceptive leaders. - To Confirm God’s Voice “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”
— John 10:27 (ESV) Discernment helps us confirm what is truly from the Lord and what is our own voice—or the enemy’s. - To Guard the Church “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.”
— Matthew 7:15 (ESV) God often uses individuals with this gift to keep watch over the spiritual well-being of the Church. - To Make Godly Decisions
In relationships, ministry, spiritual warfare, and even personal choices, discernment gives wisdom from above.
Characteristics of a Discerning Person
Those with the gift of discernment often display these traits:
- A strong sensitivity to spiritual atmospheres
- Ability to sense when something is not right—even if nothing appears wrong outwardly
- A hunger for truth and the Word of God
- Courage to speak truth even when unpopular
- A heart for intercession and spiritual warfare
- Deep compassion coupled with godly wisdom
But discernment must be balanced with love and humility. The goal is not to criticise, but to protect, guide, and edify the body of Christ.
Growing in Discernment
Even if you do not have the gift of discernment, the Bible urges all believers to grow in spiritual wisdom.
“But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”
— Hebrews 5:14 (KJV)
How to grow in discernment:
- Know the Word
The Bible is our measuring stick. The more we study and meditate on Scripture, the easier it is to recognise what does and doesn’t align with God’s truth. - Spend Time in God’s Presence
The more time we spend in worship, prayer, and communion with God, the more familiar we become with His voice. - Ask for Wisdom “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God…”
— James 1:5 (KJV) God delights in giving wisdom to those who seek it. - Stay Humble and Teachable
Pride is the enemy of discernment. Stay soft before the Lord, always open to correction. - Be Accountable
Surround yourself with mature believers. Sometimes what we discern needs confirmation through wise counsel and spiritual elders.
Stay Rooted in God’s Word
The foundation of discernment is Scripture. God’s Word shapes our thinking, corrects our understanding, and reveals His character. Without a steady intake of Scripture, discernment becomes subjective and unstable.
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
Psalm 119:105
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”
2 Timothy 3:16
As we read, study, and meditate on Scripture, the Holy Spirit uses it to sharpen our spiritual awareness and guard us from deception.
Discernment in Spiritual Warfare
Discernment is also a key weapon in spiritual warfare. The enemy often works through subtle lies, emotional manipulation, confusion, and spiritual distractions. A discerning believer can identify the enemy’s schemes early and resist them with the truth of God’s Word.
“Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.”
— 2 Corinthians 2:11 (KJV)
Walk Closely with the Holy Spirit
Discernment is a work of the Holy Spirit within us. Jesus promised that the Spirit would guide believers into truth and help us recognise what aligns with God’s will.
“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.”
John 16:13
“Those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.”
Romans 8:14
Growing in discernment requires daily dependence on the Spirit—listening, obeying, and allowing Him to shape our responses rather than reacting in our own strength.
Pray for Wisdom and Understanding
Discernment grows through prayer. Scripture encourages believers to ask God for wisdom, trusting that He gives generously.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault.”
James 1:5
Prayer aligns our hearts with God’s purposes and opens us to His guidance. Through prayer, we learn to pause, listen, and seek God before making decisions.
Test Everything Against Scripture
The Bible repeatedly calls believers to test teachings, spiritual experiences, and influences. Not everything that sounds spiritual is from God.
“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.”
1 John 4:1
“Examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good.”
1 Thessalonians 5:21
Discernment grows as we measure everything against the truth of God’s Word rather than feelings, trends, or popularity.
Grow Through Obedience and Practice
Discernment is developed through lived faith. As we consistently obey God, our spiritual senses become sharper.
“Solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.”
Hebrews 5:14
Spiritual maturity does not happen overnight. It is cultivated through faithful obedience, repentance, humility, and daily walking with Christ.
Seek Godly Community and Counsel
God often uses other believers to help sharpen our discernment. Wise counsel provides perspective, accountability, and encouragement.
“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.”
Proverbs 20:18
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
Proverbs 27:17
Discerning believers remain teachable and open to correction, knowing that God works through His people.
Guard Your Heart and Mind
What we allow into our hearts shapes our spiritual sensitivity. Discernment requires intentional guarding of our thoughts, media intake, and influences.
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
Proverbs 4:23
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right… think about such things.”
Philippians 4:8
A guarded heart becomes a discerning heart.
Growing in Discernment Is Growing in Christ
Discernment is not a spiritual shortcut—it is the fruit of abiding in Christ. As we grow closer to Jesus, His voice becomes clearer, His truth more familiar, and His ways more evident.
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”
John 10:27
A Prayer for Discernment
Heavenly Father,
I thank You for Your Holy Spirit who leads us into all truth. I ask that You would give me the gift of discernment—to see clearly, hear wisely, and judge rightly. Protect me from every form of deception. Help me to grow in the knowledge of Your Word, and to walk in truth and love. Make me sensitive to the movements of Your Spirit and quick to reject anything that is not of You. Use me, Lord, to help others walk in truth and to bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Final Thoughts: Truth in Love
Discernment is not about pointing fingers. It is about walking in truth, guided by love, and empowered by the Spirit of God. In a world of confusion, may we be a people of clarity. In a world of compromise, may we stand for truth. In a world of lies, may we be filled with the light of Christ.
“And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; That ye may approve things that are excellent…”
— Philippians 1:9–10 (KJV)
Let the gift of discernment awaken in your heart. The Church needs it. The world needs it. And God is ready to give it.
