Truth, Not Fairy Tales

A puzzle image featuring the word 'TRUTH' in large letters, with the background in various shades of blue and grey.

People Don’t Die for Fairy Tales

People do not willingly suffer and die for what they know is false. While many throughout history have died for beliefs they thought were true, the first followers of Jesus were in a different position: they would have known whether the resurrection was real or invented. Yet many endured persecution and death rather than deny Him. That does not prove Christianity by itself, but it gives strong historical weight to the Christian claim.

Jesus in History

Jesus of Nazareth was born around 6–4 BC during the reign of Herod the Great.[1] He was crucified around AD 30–33 under Pontius Pilate.[2] These events are not only recorded in the New Testament, but also referenced by ancient non-Christian historians such as Tacitus and Josephus.[3]

One of the earliest Christian creeds, found in 1 Corinthians 15:3–8, states that Christ died, was buried, rose again, and appeared to many witnesses. Many scholars date this creed to within a few years of the crucifixion.[4]

The Disciples: Changed by Something Real

Before the resurrection claims, the disciples were fearful and in hiding (John 20:19). Afterwards, they publicly proclaimed Jesus as risen Lord, despite threats, imprisonment, beatings, and death.

Apostles and Early Witnesses

  • Peter — Traditionally crucified in Rome under Emperor Nero around AD 64–67.[5]
  • James son of Zebedee — Executed by sword in Jerusalem around AD 44, recorded in Acts 12:2.[6]
  • John — Exiled to Patmos and traditionally believed to have died naturally around AD 90–100.[7]
  • Thomas — Ancient tradition states he was martyred in India around AD 72.[8]
  • Andrew — Traditionally crucified in Patras, Greece.[9]
  • Matthew, Bartholomew, Philip, Simon the Zealot, and Jude Thaddeus — Early Christian tradition records martyrdoms, though some details are uncertain.[10]

Other Early Christian Martyrs

  • Stephen — Stoned to death around AD 34–36 (Acts 7).
  • James the Just (brother of Jesus) — Killed around AD 62 in Jerusalem, recorded by Josephus.[11]
  • Ignatius of Antioch — Martyred in Rome around AD 107–110.[12]
  • Polycarp of Smyrna — Martyred around AD 155.[13]

Through the Centuries

Christian martyrdom continued long after the apostles.

  • Perpetua and Felicity — Executed in Carthage in AD 203.[14]
  • William Tyndale — Executed in 1536 for translating the Bible into English.[15]
  • Many Christians in the modern world still face persecution, imprisonment, and death for their faith.[16]

Why This Matters

People may die for false beliefs they sincerely think are true. But the apostles were unique because they were the claimed eyewitnesses. If the resurrection had been fabricated, they would have known it.

Yet they accepted suffering rather than deny what they proclaimed.

This does not force belief, but it strongly challenges the claim that Christianity began as a fairy tale.

Final Question

If Jesus did not rise, why did those closest to Him maintain that message under torture and death?

If He did rise, then history changed forever.
